Whole Child Challenge: Helping kids lead, play, and connect

Keep it Growing — Play, Connection and Lasting Habits

Introduction:

As Whole Child Month wraps up, this final week focuses on sustaining what your family started — more independence, play, and real-world connection. These small steps can grow into lifelong habits that support emotional health and resilience.

Why it matters:

Unstructured play and social time help children practice problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity. Continuing these habits builds:

  • Stronger social skills
  • Better stress management
  • Lasting confidence
  • Joy and curiosity about the world

Parent tips:

  • Keep a weekly “Play Slot” — a regular time for child-led play without screens.
  • Encourage neighborhood or friend playdates where kids lead the fun.
  • Notice and praise initiative: “I liked how you organized that!”
  • Protect free time as much as you protect academic time.

This Week’s Let Grow Challenge:

Support your child in organizing one “Play & Connect” activity with friends. It could be:

  • A backyard or park game
  • Building something together
  • Making up a play or skit
  • Exploring a safe area nearby

Let them decide the rules and structure — adults stay nearby but hands-off.

Family Reflection:
End the month by talking together:

  • What changed since Week 1?
  • Which new habits helped your child grow?
  • What will your family keep doing after January?
